about

As a co-founder of the Midi Deux nights, a member of the Qui Embrouille Qui collective alongside DJ AZF, a former resident and curator at La Machine du Moulin Rouge, talented Rennes DJ and producer Théo Muller has, over the last few years, multiplied his involvement in the French electronic scene while putting his Breton origins at the forefront.

Under his own name, he contributed the deep track Douce Transe on Lumière Noire’s inaugural various artists compilation, 2018’s From Above, and released his debut EP, Finistère Amer, on the label Concrète. Following up with a second outing on Lumière Noire was almost an inevitability.

With Diaoul, the young, versatile DJ and producer finally exceeds our expectations. Over four tracks, the artist unleashes his twisted yet resourceful approach to production. The title itself reflects this: “Diaoul means devil or bad boy in Breton,” he explains. “The concept can be tied to the korrigan and ankou of ancient legends. I love the sea, Britanny… and techno.”

With its heavy atmosphere, opener La Sentence Est Irrévocable hints at a secret, dark and intriguing dramaturgy that keeps the listener under a constant tension: “I came up with most of these tracks while on a trip to Mexico, on the night buses, and La Sentence is especially radical,” he asserts. But the somewhat ironic production betrays an underlying sense of humour that doesn’t hesitate to refer to a well-known reality TV survival competition.

The more direct I Thought, with its insistent rhythm and menacing sirens, elbows its way through the techno arena, while Utopia summons traditional Haitian chants, over a stubborn reverbed guitar riff that come together to create an track that manages to be airy and groovy all at once.

Through Diaoul’s fourth track, Théo Muller delivers his densest, wiliest, and most haunting creation yet. Cerebral and pulsating, the track invokes the unrelenting voice of an imperious robot repeating “Shape the future,” an invitation to malleate one’s world without compromise. To end the proceedings, the title track is given a remix treatment by A Strange Wedding (of Saint-Étienne collective Positive Education) who brings down the tension with a dub-inflected slice of techno, delivering almost eight minutes of a hypnotic, languorous groove.
